This newsletter provides an overview of all upcoming activities, either organized specifically for postdocs or for postdocs and PhD students combined, and links to other potentially interesting events or information.

More details on, and registration links for, upcoming activities are available on the website of the doctoral schools. When you enrol for a doctoral school activity, make sure to take our cancellation & no-show policy into account. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact us at all times on doctoralschools@uhasselt.be.

1. A postdoctoral position: what next?

What to do after your postdoctoral position? Are you at this point of deciding whether to go ahead with academia or switch to a non-academic career? Great news: on December 13 an inspiring session will take place with a specific focus on postdoctoral research and possible career paths. This event consists of 4 testimonials, followed by a panel session. The programme is varied in the sense that both postdoc holders who pursued a non-academic career and an academic career will take the floor. They will tell you their personal story: Why did they do a postdoctoral position? How does this fit into their current career? Which obstacles did they encounter? What would they do differently now? Are they still happy with their choices? After the testimonials, we will exchange opinions on specific statements during a panel session. Finally, a sandwich lunch will be provided during which you'll get the opportunity to network. The detailed programme can be found on our website and you can register here from September 12 until November 24, 2024.

2. Research Data Management - RDM training calendar 2024-2025 available

From planning to wrapping up, in our RDM trainings you will learn how to manage your research data adequately in each phase of your research project. Get a guided tour through the Data Management Plan (DMP), discover your inner neat freak during our data cleaning sessions, become a bodyguard for personal and confidential information during our data protection workshops, ... Find out which RDM skills you can still improve while browsing through our diverse training offer.

3. Big interview

Big interview is an online career platform with a focus on job interviews and resumes. The platform contains video lessons that give insight into common interview questions, types of interviews and interviewers, tips and tricks on nonverbal communication, and so on. Above all, you will get the chance to prepare yourself by means of mock interviews. Personalised feedback on your mock interview answers will be given thanks to the AI feedback tool. Finally, you can build your personal resume by an online creator tool and you can scan your resume in order to receive feedback afterwards. Good news: it is free if you sign up with your Hasselt University e-mail address! Create your account here. Detailed information can be found on our website.

4. From PhD to SME 2024-2025

Twelve (post)doctoral researchers are given the unique opportunity to learn more about how SMEs are run and will find out how to put this knowledge immediately into practice during the From PhD to SME trajectory, which is a joint effort of the doctoral schools and VOKA. The aim of 'From PhD to SME' is to build bridges between the world of research and small and medium-sized enterprises and to let you gain insights into your own strengths and interests to see how they match with the expectations and values of a business. Find out everything about the programme here and register for the trajectory until September 29, 2024.

5. Wellbeing inside-out

A PhD journey takes time, patience and sustained effort: it's a marathon rather than a sprint. You have to keep many balls in the air to reach the finish line. This can sometimes be stressful. In addition, it can also affect your wellbeing. Therefore, the doctoral schools join forces with the HR Department for ‘Wellbeing inside-out’ on October 10 & 11, 2024. This two-day initiative is filled with lots of sessions that help to increase your confidence, resilience and that bring you in contact with fellow Hasselt University colleagues and researchers. The detailed programme, as well as the registration links, can be found here.
