This newsletter provides an overview of all upcoming activities, either organized specifically for postdocs or for postdocs and PhD students combined, and links to other potentially interesting events or information.

More details on, and registration links for, upcoming activities are available on the website of the doctoral schools. When you enrol for a doctoral school activity, make sure to take our cancellation & no-show policy into account. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact us at all times on doctoralschools@uhasselt.be.

1. A postdoctoral position: what next?

What to do after your postdoctoral position? Are you at this point of deciding whether to go ahead with academia or switch to a non-academic career? Great news: on December 13 an inspiring session will take place with a specific focus on postdoctoral research and possible career paths. This event consists of 4 testimonials, followed by a panel session. The programme is varied in the sense that both postdoc holders who pursued a non-academic career and an academic career will take the floor. They will tell you their personal story: Why did they do a postdoctoral position? How does this fit into their current career? Which obstacles did they encounter? What would they do differently now? Are they still happy with their choices? After the testimonials, we will exchange opinions on specific statements during a panel session. Finally, a sandwich lunch will be provided during which you'll get the opportunity to network. The detailed programme can be found on our website and you can register here from September 12, 2024 until November 24, 2024.

2. Mentoring trajectory 2025: Apply now for civic or academic mentoring!

The mentoring programme aims to support postdoctoral researchers in their further career development. It implies a one-on-one interaction between an experienced mentor and a less experienced mentee. As a postdoc you can apply for an academic or civic track. The latter entails mentoring towards successfully entering the external labour market by someone from a non-academic organization, while the former means that you will be mentored towards an academic career, by a UHasselt professor. Mentor and mentee will meet each other on a regular basis and exchange experiences. Apply until November 30, 2024 by sending a motivation statement, explaining your reasons for wanting a mentor, to careercenter@uhasselt.be. More info and details about the entire trajectory can be found here. Please read the requirements carefully before you apply.

3. Survey: Job search insights

Please share your feedback on how you approach the labour market. In this survey by the interuniversity PhD Talent Coordination Team, we would like to gather your feedback regarding your experiences and challenges while navigating the non-academic job market as a PhD candidate, postdoctoral researcher or other type of researcher. We will discuss your feedback with company representatives to see how we can enhance application and recruitment efforts. Your answers will have a direct impact! More info on the PhD Talent Coordination Team and the Advisory Board can be found on this website. Take the survey via this link until November 3, 2024.

4. Buddy trajectory 2024-2025

Are you ready to take your PhD journey to the next level? The Buddy trajectory is here to support you! Whether you're new or experienced, this is a great opportunity to connect with peers and share the journey. Sign up today (and before November 6, 2024) to be paired with a junior or senior buddy and make meaningful connections that will help you navigate the challenges and celebrate the victories of PhD life. Don't miss out on this chance to be part of a supportive PhD community! Let’s build connections and thrive together!
