Pieter Verding embarked on his academic journey at Hasselt University, earning both his bachelor's and master's degrees in electromechanical engineering. His scientific exploration took a significant turn in 2019 during his master's thesis at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research in Mainz. There, he developed an optical laser system capable of precisely measuring the size and velocity of small droplets generated by an ultrasonic spray coater.
Eager to delve deeper into the world of research, Pieter wasted no time and immediately pursued a Ph.D. under the expert guidance of Professor Wim Deferme at the University of Hasselt. His doctoral research, supported by the prestigious FWO funding in 2020, revolves around unraveling the intricate relationship between Ultrasonic Spray Coating parameters, droplet characteristics, and layer formation.
Pieter's primary focus lies in scrutinizing the influence of printing and ink parameters on droplet formation, thereby shaping the subsequent layer structure. His research delves into understanding the dynamics of droplets and the nuanced parameters governing their formation. Notably, this expertise finds practical application in his work on nanocrystalline diamond coatings, a crucial contribution to the groundbreaking Ultrahard project.
Actively engaged in the Ultrahard project, Pieter plays a vital role in the deposition of diamond seeds using ultrasonic spray coating. The overarching objective is to achieve optical and scratch-resistant protective layers on glass made of diamond through meticulously controlled growth processes. This pioneering work positions him at the forefront of materials science and engineering, with applications spanning from optics to protective coatings.
With a solid background in electromechanical engineering, Pieter Verding emerges as a promising researcher contributing significantly to the fields of materials science and engineering. His unwavering dedication to unraveling the complexities of droplet dynamics and optimizing coating processes underscores his commitment to scientific excellence and innovation.
