• take 1 domain-specific course organized at PhD level (it is allowed and may be needed to take courses elsewhere)

• attend at least 1 session on research ethics and integrity (preferably in year 2)

Internationalisation

• give at least 3 presentations at various international conferences (talk, poster, exhibition, performance, ...)

IP, valorisation & science communication

• participation in at least 1 initiative (information session on IP and/or valorisation - preferably in year 1, initiative communicating scientific results to non-academic audience, ...)

Career management & personal development

• attend at least 2 sessions, preferably 1 session aimed at career management and 1 session aimed at personal development

ACF:

BINF:

DIV:

• dissertation, and

EEC:

• dissertation, and

GOV:

• dissertation, and

• for PhD students without a structural teaching assignment: mandatory participation in 3 thematic modules organized by the department 'Educational development, diversity and innovation' (dienst Onderwijs), or an equivalent
• for everyone: attend at least 1 'education day' (onderwijsdag) - for foreign speaking PhD students, this may be replaced by participating in one additional thematic module organized by the department 'Educational development, diversity and innovation' (dienst Onderwijs) or an equivalent

Research management & communication skills

• minimum 16 contact hours, divided over at least 2 different courses

Advanced discipline-specific knowledge

• minimum 48 hours (or 12 study points) in total
• at least 24 hours (or 6 study points) need to be fulfilled through one complete course**, in which participants are required to make an active contribution (either as preparation, during the course, or as part of the evaluation)
• at most 24 hours can be spent on more passive activities such as attending conferences, symposia or lectures. For this type of activities, the added value for the PhD of the applicant needs to be substantiated.

Ethics & integrity

• attend at least 2 sessions regarding ethics and integrity - preferably 1 session in the first year and 1 session in the middle of the doctoral trajectory

Internationalisation

• give at least 2 oral presentations at international conferences or pre-conference doctoral symposia (throughout doctoral trajectory)
• research stay abroad is recommended
• specification for ACF & GOV: international event that uses peer review (e.g., IFERA, EURAM, AOM, EAA, EFA, SMS)

IP, valorisation & science communication

• participation in at least 1 initiative (relevant information session or workshop, participation in practice-based research, publications aimed at general public, or initiatives communicating scientific results to a non-academic audience)
• addition for ACF & GOV: preferably participation in contract research that is related to PhD

Career management & personal development

• attend at least 1 session aimed at career management, and
• attend at least 1 session aimed at personal development (e.g., workshop on collaboration, coaching, leadership, ...)

*If applicable, you will be contacted by Cindy Vankerkom. In case the structural teaching assignment only starts in year 2, 3, … and you already participated in some of the thematic modules before, this will be taken into account for the full trajectory. Whether or not teaching assignments need to be fulfilled is determined within the faculty.

** It is possible to apply for an exception to this rule by submitting a motivated request explaining how you would fulfill this requirement by means of a combination of shorter active courses and why. This request may be submitted to DSrequirements@uhasselt.be.

Throughout the doctoral trajectory, each PhD candidate needs to collect 30 points, with the following distribution:

• 20 points in discipline-specific activities (D),
• 10 points in non-discipline-specific activities (ND).

The activities should be spread as much as possible, and should be selected in consultation with the PhD supervisor and according to the needs of the research and the wishes/interests of the PhD candidate.

Below is an overview of the requirements:

• attendance of extra modules on education (1 point ND / module)
• participation in yearly 'education day' (2 points ND / day)
• teaching assignments (= fulfilling the requirements per statute) (2 points ND)

Research management & communication skills

• mandatory presentation of at least 1 doctoral seminar (1 point D / seminar)
• mandatory attendance of at least 2 doctoral seminars (0,5 point D / seminar)
• workshops/courses on general communication skills (e.g., academic English/French, presentation techniques, ...) or research skills (e.g., writing scientific papers, writing project applications, ...) (0,5 point ND / half day)
• engagement as a member of the editorial board of a journal (1 point D / editorial work, can only be acknowledged once)

Advanced discipline-specific knowledge

• initiation in comparative law, international databases, methodology of law, ... (0,5 point D / half day)
• other workshops/courses useful for the PhD student's own research (0,5 point D / half day)

Ethics & integrity

• attending a session on ethics (1 point ND / session)

Internationalisation

• research stay abroad (3 points D / week)
• attending Ius Commune initiative or other international activity (workshop/seminar/colloquium/summer school/conference) (0,5 point D / half day)
• presentation within the framework of Ius Commune or at an international event (3 points D / presentation)

IP, valorisation & science communication

• initiatives, lectures and publications aimed at the general public (e.g., interviews, 'Universiteit Vrije Tijd', lecture for vzw, article in juristenkrant, organization of a congress) (0,5 point D / activity)

Career management & personal development

• mandatory attendance of at least 2 sessions, preferably 1 session aimed at career management and 1 session aimed at personal development (0,5 point ND / half day)

• attend the introductory module on education at Hasselt University organized by the Department of Educational excellence, professionalization and diversity
• follow a ‘teacher education program’ (e.g. Educational Master) or prove to have attended sessions in teacher training or have taken part in a trajectory of professionalization of teaching (or an equivalent)

Research management & communication skills

• minimum 16 contact hours, divided over at least 2 different courses (e.g. academic writing, writing/speaking for a broad audience, …)
• organisation of lectures, symposia, conferences, … (optional)

Advanced discipline-specific knowledge

• take at least 2 advanced courses relevant for PhD topic, at least one of which is focusing on methodological topics in the field of education and social sciences
• attend at least 5 keynotes/seminars/research presentations from internationally recognized experts at different events with a focus on the field of education, throughout PhD

Ethics & integrity

• attend at least 1 session on ethics and/or research integrity

Internationalisation

• give at least 2 oral presentations about PhD research at international conferences (e.g. paper sessions, roundtable, …)
• a research stay abroad is strongly recommended

  • at least 24 hours (or 6 ECTs) need to be fulfilled through courses at PhD level in which participants are required to make an active contribution (either as preparation, during the course, or as part of the evaluation)
  • For ‘passive’ activities such as attending conferences, symposia or lectures, the relevance to the PhD project needs to be briefly explained by the PhD student

Ethics & integrity

• attend at least 2 sessions regarding ethics and integrity (e.g. data collection norms, generating a data management plan) of which one preferably in the first year of the PhD project

Internationalisation

• give at least 2 oral presentations at international conferences or pre-conference doctoral symposia during the PhD
• a (short) research stay abroad is recommended but not required

IP, valorisation & science communication

• in line with the civic approach to science of the Faculty School of Social Sciences, participation in at least 2 activities related to the communication of scientific results to a non-academic audience (e.g. relevant information session or workshop, participation in practice-based research, publications aimed at general public)
