Researcher Co-creative and material-driven exploration of sensorial and experiential aspects based on mycelium in the context of (interior)architect (25% - 40%)

Your function

This vacancy is linked to the research project ‘Co-creative and material-driven exploration of the sensorial and experiential potential of mycomaterials for the context of (interior) architecture’. This project is a collaboration between researchers from architecture (ArcK - SURE) and microbiology (Centre for Environmental Science-Microbiology) on the development of mycelium-based materials (mycomaterials). To effectively use mycomaterials as bio-based materials in the context of buildings and interiors, several knowledge gaps still need to be addressed. Most research at the intersection of architecture and mycomaterials focuses on technical aspects, while human interaction with these materials has been little explored. This 1-year, exploratory project focuses on material perception and acceptance by designers and users, with the aim of testing out the potential of a ‘material-driven design thinking approach’ as an innovative research methodology to create a materials vision for sustainable mycomaterials. The experience thus accumulated with this methodology is intended as a stepping stone to a larger research project in which both the set of qualities, capabilities and limitations of mycomaterials and the number of mycomaterials studied will be expanded.

As researcher, you will conduct the research at the faculty of Architecture and arts in close collaboration with your colleague from microbiology, under the coordination of the research leaders from ArcK-SURE and CMK-Microbiology. Your research focuses on material tinkering, the design and prototyping of small (interior) architectural objects and the evaluation of material perception and acceptance at sample and object level by users and designers. You will be responsible for all practical aspects of this research (from the side of ARCK), including aspects of responsible and ethical research (drafting data management plan, ethics committee approval). You will also take an active role in preparing the application for a larger follow-up research project.

The appointment for a percentage between 25% and 40%, depends on the profile and seniority of the researcher. The way this part-time appointment will be filled in practice will be determined by mutual agreement.
