Tenured academic staff / Tenure track lecturer Computer Science in Data Science

Your function

Teaching assignment

You will provide high-quality education in the bachelor’s and master’s programs in Computer Science and the master of Statistics and Data Science. Additionally, you actively assist in further shaping the Computer Science program and its associated bridging program. With your research expertise, you will also contribute to making the program more attractive for students. Moreover, you are open to teaching assignments in other programs.

Research assignment

You are expected to establish high-impact research lines in alignment with the mission of the Data Science Institute (DSI). These research lines should fall within the discipline of Computer Science, broadly focusing on data analysis and processing. Examples of relevant research areas include Natural Language Processing, Information Retrieval, Algorithms, Distributed Systems, Programming Languages, Database Systems, Data Mining, Machine Learning, and Artificial Intelligence, always with a focus on data processing and analysis. We seek expertise that aligns with and also complements existing strengths within the institute and the department of Computer Science. The research has a strong fundamental component while also fostering a clear interaction with system-oriented research and/or applications.

Consultancy

The DSI consultancy group executes projects for and with companies and organizations, related to the research expertise of the institute. These projects provide access to real-world data and challenges, which in turn serve as inspiration for new research and help steer the relevance of teaching. Therefore, you are open to participating in consultancy projects within DSI that align with your research interests.

Your team

The Data Science Institute (DSI) at UHasselt brings together more than 150 researchers from 4 faculties and 9 research groups within UHasselt. Drawing on expertise in statistics, computer science, mathematics, theoretical physics, life sciences, logistics, and other data science disciplines, we address data science challenges with a multidisciplinary approach. This results in innovative research, high-quality education, and impactful service in collaboration with businesses, agencies, and other organizations both locally and globally.

DSI is a rapidly growing research institute, currently home to 26 professors covering the full spectrum from fundamental scientific research to applied research. It offers colleagues an interdisciplinary, inspiring, and dynamic research environment that prioritizes a healthy work-life balance, an open communication culture, transparent and shared leadership, and adequate support at different phases and aspects of research.

A position at the Data Science Institute of UHasselt provides various opportunities for (research) funding. For example, there is BOF-funding specifically aimed at supporting junior professors. In addition, the Computer Science department is committed to assigning a PhD researcher to a new faculty member in the short term, and within the institute there are opportunities for participation in cross-disciplinary research projects.
