What?
Funding organisation: UHasselt Special Research fund + Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Science/Maastricht UMC+.
The main objective of the call is to strengthen collaboration between research partners of Hasselt University and Maastricht University (FHML/MUMC+). Within this call
6 PhD-projects (max. duration of 4 years) can be selected. This concerns joint doctorate projects, leading to a
Double Degree.
For each project, (PhD)funding is provided including a bench fee of €5.000 per year. Hasselt University and Maastricht University (FHML/MUMC+) will each co-finance the project for 50%, wherein both research groups provide part of the funding:
- UHasselt: 1 year funding of a PhD fellowship including €5.000 bench fee from BOF budget
- UHasselt: 1 year funding of a PhD fellowship including €5.000 bench fee from the internal means of the research group (AO)
- FHML: 1 year funding of a PhD candidate including €5.000 bench fee from faculty budget
- FHML: 1 year funding of a PhD candidate including €5.000 bench fee from the internal means of the research group
A PhD-candidate must be selected within 6 months of approval of the application. The candidate will be appointed at Hasselt University or at University Maastricht, to be confirmed after selection.
The project will be executed in close collaboration between both universities during the entire duration of the project. The PhD candidates will be expected to participate in the research groups at both universities during the four years of the PhD research.
The joint doctoral projects will lead to double doctoral degrees between Hasselt University and Maastricht University.
Who?
- This programme is open for PhD projects in collaboration between Hasselt University and Maastricht University in the domains of (interdisciplinary) research in Health, Medicine and Life Sciences. The project has to enhance the collaboration between UHasselt and Maastricht University.
- Supervisors must be able to act as a supervisor (or co-supervisor), according to the UHasselt doctoral regulations and Maastricht University ‘Regulations for obtaining the doctoral degree at Maastricht University’.
- Supervisors at Maastricht University must be affiliated to FHML.
- Supervisors at UHasselt can be affiliated to all faculties or schools, provided that the research is in the domain of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences.
- Projects can be submitted with or without a candidate. In case a project is submitted with a candidate: only a candidate PhD at the start of a doctoral trajectory who apply for 4 years of funding is eligible.

A joint selection committee (UHasselt and Maastricht University) will discuss all applications based upon evaluation reports, and prepare a selection that will be submitted to the Bureau of the Research Council and the Board of FHML/Maastricht UMC+. The final selection will be confirmed by the joint SLS Board.
The preselection will be based on a scoring grid.
