What?

The Doctoral Networks are part of the Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions. 
Doctoral Networks aims to implement doctoral programs through partnerships with organizations from different sectors across Europe and beyond to train highly skilled doctoral candidates, stimulate their creativity, enhance their innovation capacities and boost their employability in the long term. 

All Doctoral Networks aim to promote international, inter-sectoral, and multi/interdisciplinary collaboration in doctoral-level training in Europe. They also have the objective of training highly-skilled doctoral candidates and stimulating entrepreneurship, creativity, and innovation in Europe and beyond.

There are three different types of networks:

  1. Standard Doctoral Networks (DN): candidates are enrolled in a doctoral program and a joint research project. 
  2. Industrial Doctorates (DN-ID): They train Ph.D. candidates who wish to develop their skills and step outside academia, particularly in industry and business. Individual participants must be enrolled in a doctoral program and jointly supervised by academic and non-academic partners. The skills acquired match public and private sector needs. 
  3. Joint Doctorates (DN-JD): aim to meet the objectives of DN but go further by proposing the creation of joint doctoral programs, leading to the delivery of joint, double, or multiple doctoral degrees recognized in at least two EU Member States (MS) or Horizon Europe Associated Countries (AC)

Doctoral Networks can last for up to four years. The duration of each fellowship is between three and 36 months. Each beneficiary must recruit at least one doctoral candidate and can also organize secondments for them anywhere in the world. 

Who?

Researchers funded by Doctoral Networks:
  • can be of any research area;
  • can be of any nationality;
  • must not have a doctoral degree at the date of their recruitment;
  • have to be enrolled in a doctoral programme and should work full-time on the project;
  • have to comply with the mobility rule: they must not have resided or carried out their main activity in the country of the recruiting beneficiary for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before their recruitment date;
  • 40% rule: no more than 40.0% of the total EU contribution, may be allocated to beneficiaries in the same country or to a single International European Research Organization or International Organization. 

Industrial Doctorates have an additional condition:

  • researchers have to spend at least 50% of their time in the non-academic sector and are jointly supervised by the academic and non-academic partners. 

Application?

Proposals have to be submitted using the HORIZON Europe Participant Portal.

Resubmission restrictions: please note that, according to the Work Programme, applicants having received a score below 80% in the DN 2022 call are not eligible to resubmit a similar proposal in this DN 2023 call.

Doctoral Networks indicative timeline:

  • 28 November 2023: Deadline for submitting proposals
  • April 2024: Notification of call results to applicants (to be confirmed)
  • July 2024: Grant agreement signature for successful projects (to be confirmed)
  • August 2024: First EU-funded projects start (to be confirmed)
