Doctoral Networks are a part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions and fall under the ‘excellent science’ pillar of the EU’s research and innovation funding programme Horizon Europe. These actions aim to boost lasting careers for excellent and innovative researchers through international, intersectoral and interdisciplinary training. Doctoral Networks are formed by strategic international consortia of academic and non-academic partners that recruit several doctoral candidates (DCs) for individual PhD projects within an overarching collaborative research project. Doctoral Networks are open to innovative and original research from all fields and are encouraged to be interdisciplinary.
There are three types of networks:
Doctoral Networks can last for up to four years for DN and DN-ID, and up to five years for DN-JD. The duration of a fellowship is three to 36 months for DN and DN-ID, and three to 48 months for DN-JD. Consortia contain at least three beneficiaries from three different Member States or Associated Countries and no more than 40% of the budget can be allocated to institutions of the same country. Each beneficiary must recruit at least one DC and can organise secondments for them to other beneficiaries or associated partners anywhere in the world.
Doctoral candidates:
Mobility rule: DCs must not have resided or carried out their main activity in the country of the recruiting beneficiary for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before their recruitment date.
Doctoral Candidates receive extensive and tailor-made training and are encouraged to take on secondments outside academia. For DN-ID, these secondments must encompass at least 50% of the fellowship.
