What?

The Fulbright Schuman Program funds advanced study, research, and teaching in the field of US-EU relations and EU political affairs. It is administered by the Fulbright Commission in Brussels and is jointly financed by the US State Department and the Directorate-General for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture of the European Commission.

Fulbright Schuman Grants are available to candidates from any EU Member State who have been invited to study, research, or lecture by an American university or non-profit research institution on a topic relevant to US-EU relations, EU policy, or EU institutions. Activities must observe an issue of common concern from a comparative perspective and must be relevant to at least two EU Member States.

Belgian citizens can apply for the following grants:
  1. Graduate Studies Award (Master's, PhD): As part of the Fulbright Foreign Student Program, Fulbright awards scholarships for graduate studies in any academic field at an accredited U.S. institution for a period of 9 months.
  2. Doctoral Research Award (before or as part of ongoing PhD): As part of the Fulbright Foreign Student Program, Fulbright awards scholarships to doctoral research in any academic field at an accredited U.S. institution for a period between four and nine months. 
  3. Post-Doctoral Research and Lecturing Award: As part of the Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program, Fulbright awards scholarships to conduct research and/or lecture in any academic field at an accredited U.S. institution for a period between three months and nine months.
Departures must take place between 1 August in the year of award and 31 March of the following year, i.e., the academic year immediately following application.

Funding: Scholarship depending on the type of grant, including travel stipend and health benefit plan.
While the monthly grant amount is calculated in Euros, it will be converted to US Dollars at the exchange rate in force on the day of payment.

Application?

Application period: Between 15 September and 1 December 2024 (12:00 CET) for applicants who intend to start their research or lecturing in the academic year of 2025-2026.
