What?
The BOF exchange programme for PhD mobility to and from UC Berkeley
facilitates outgoing mobility to UC Berkeley and incoming mobility from UC Berkeley for PhD students through a short stay of 1 to 3 months. The selection process of outgoing candidates will be done at UHasselt by the Research Council. The selection process of incoming candidates from UC Berkeley will be conducted at UC Berkeley but in collaboration with an UHasselt promoter. Selected candidates will be presented at the UHasselt research council for final approval and limited funding.
The fellowship for outgoing UHasselt candidates provides
- PhD students from UHasselt with a visiting student researcher status during the exchange;
- PhD students from UHasselt with an own working space at the Doe Library Graduate Services and access to printer, scanner, and WIFI;
- the same access to university facilities as full PhD student members of the host university, including library, sports and student union facilities, and student clubs;
- support to the UHasselt PhD student in the academic progress, physical relocation and cultural orientation;
- the IES visiting scholar administrative fee to be partially waived (see section costs).
Who?
- Applications can be submitted by UHasselt PhD researchers with their promoter and an acceptance letter of a professor at UC Berkeley, who will guide the student during the stay at UC Berkeley;
- Participants in the exchange are required to have completed at least one (1) year of full-time university studies prior to participation in the exchange, of which at least six months as a PhD student;
- Each participant in the exchange must ensure that they have adequate health and accident insurance coverage.
Costs?
PhD students from UHasselt have to cover all costs associated with their stay at UCB, including:
- the regular DS-2019 processing fee ($ 650),
- VSPA University Services fee ($1000),
- Department of Homeland Security SEVIS processing fee ($180)
- U.S. Embassy/Consulate J-1 visa application fee ($ 160)
- The IES Visiting Scholar administrative fee: outside this programme this amounts to $ 2,000 (for stays up to 5 months). Within this programme this will be partially waived: UCB waives $ 1,500 of this overall $ 2,000 administrative fee for UHasselt participants accepted to UCB.
The Special Research Fund does not provide funding for the outgoing mobility for PhD students, but encourages PhD students to apply with
