Meet the jury seminar: How we teach machines to read, write, and draw

We kindly invite you to join the ‘Meet the Jury’ seminar, featuring international speakers to discuss their research on 'How we teach machines to read, write, and draw'.

This seminar will be given by:

• Prof. dr. Silvia Cascianelli (University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Italy)

In our daily lives, we are surrounded by text: from the written word in books and newspapers to the digital text on screens, our interactions with images often involve a significant textual component. The unique abilities of humans to draw, write, and read have long set us apart as the primary creators and interpreters of text and documents.
A long tradition of research efforts has been devoted to giving Artificial Intelligence the same abilities. In this talk, we will explore the applications of AI in the analysis and generation of documents in the broad sense of the word. Furthermore, the discussion will extend beyond surface-level applications, offering insights into the cutting-edge techniques that underpin Document AI (and modern AI in general).

Bio:
Prof. dr. Silvia Cascianelli received her Ph.D. degree cum laude in Information and Industrial Engineering from the University of Perugia in 2019. She is currently an Assistant Professor with the Department of Engineering “Enzo Ferrari” and a member of the Interdepartmental Centre for Digital Humanities (DHMoRe), University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. She works with Prof. Rita Cucchiara on Deep Learning and Computer Vision. She has authored or co-authored more than 50 publications in scientific journals and international conference proceedings and serves as Associate Editor for the IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters. Her research interests include generative AI, embodied AI, multimedia, document analysis, and computer vision for cultural heritage and digital humanities applications
