Project R-6946

Title

Energy projects in Africa (Education)

Abstract

As part of a master's thesis 2x2 students from the Faculty of IIW (Electromechanics and Energy) will go to Kenya (Ukunda) for 3 months to generate power for applications such as ovens and food heating in a lower (and secondary) school! The generation of energy will be done by processing waste into pellets (construction of a pellet installation) (Part 1 - 2 students - from October untill December), and to use these pellets in a self build incinerator to heat (for example) water or other nutrients (Part 2 - 2 students - from February untill May). In this way, waste can be used in an ecological way to extract useful energy. Since this is a secondary school where professions are taught, there will also be a transfer of knowledge from the master students to the local teachers and pupils so that they can maintain this system in the future. In addition, visits to universities in Kenya (University of Nairobi, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology and Moi University) are scheduled to discuss if they are interested in doing research together into developing systems for energy generation and storage (via VLIR UOS TEAM projects).

Period of project

05 September 2016 - 23 June 2017
