The complementary and enriching character of MOOCs as a unique educational concept for master degree programmes at UHasselt: a pilot project (Education)
Abstract
In the School for Transportation Sciences, we would like to offer 2 couses before the start of the academic year through the help of a MOOC. As such, students will gain basic knowledge, which will be expanded during the master training. It is important to bear in mind that the MOOC will be part of the preparational program (12ECTS). However, students are still required to complete of full master programmen of 120ETCS. As such, the MOOC will contribute to our institute as a marketing tool, which offers insight about particular courses to a worldwide audience. In addition, we immediately carry out a certain quality control so that suitable students are selected. MOOCs have already proven to put a spotlight on a particular course program or a smaller university such as UHasselt. Furthermore, research has also shown that implementing peer assessment in a MOOC, as an innovative evaluation tool, is an excellent way to increase the involvement of the participants and thus to provide an answer for the great loss of registered but not active participants. We can therefore say that MOOCs are a stepping stone to research and valorisation.
