Title

Self-assembly of organic donor-acceptor complexes within the confinement of a perovskite lattice: a fundamental study of the relation between structure and opto-electronic properties. (Research)

Abstract

The main objective of this project is to achieve a fundamental insight in the structure and properties of 2D layered hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites with incorporated organic semiconductors and organic charge-transfer complexes derived from them by intercalation of organic acceptor molecules. The challenge is to merge in one single framework the best of two worlds, namely the versatility of organic semiconductors and organic charge-transfer complexes with the robustness and remarkable electronic properties of inorganic perovskites. In this way a new generation of materials is disclosed that takes advantage of the complementary properties and triggers synergetic effects between the inorganic lattice and the organic bilayer formed by self-assembly. To the best of our knowledge this is a novel class of materials virtually unexplored till now. It is expected that totally new directions of research will be revealed, eventually leading to a wide variation in applications in optical and electronic devices. To reach this goal a combination of fundamental interdisciplinary research activities is proposed going from material synthesis, theoretical modelling, structure control on the nano-scale, structural and physical characterisation, until layer processing and evaluation of the device physics at hand. This approach is made possible by interacting with the research network that is present, containing partners with complementary background expertise and infrastructure.
