A Pilot waste and environmental Pollution Mitigation Using Innovative Renewable Technologies for Mombasa Region in Kenya (Education)

Academia plays a vital role in providing access to clean energy through training and research. However, at the Technical University of Mombasa, there is a need to leverage the faculty members' competencies in innovative renewable energy technologies. Besides, in most schools and universities in Kenya, cooking and heating is performed with sources such as wood fuel, supplemented with liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cookers, while food leftovers could be used. The main objective of this research is to reduce waste and environmental pollution in Mombasa region. The project action is the first of a long term capacity enhancement in sustainable renewable energy technologies, initiated by TUM and UHasselt, which will be disseminated to the secondary schools and local communities including neighbouring counties in the region. The project involves the creation of a pilot Solar/Biogas digester at TUM's kitchen for cooking and heating using solar energy and bio-waste, as well as for training, research and dissemination purposes.
