Project R-13699

Title

Collaborative research network for global SAF supply chain development (Research)

Abstract

This project focuses on supply chain challenges for sustainable aviation fuels in Africa. The overarching goals of this task are to study the current hurdles for the development of a local SAF industry in Africa, to develop sound science-driven advice to help overcome these hurdles, and to help kick-start the sustainable aviation fuels industry in Africa. To do so, we will first develop an understanding of the current economic, social, environmental, technological, logistical, and legal hurdles for SAF development in Africa. We will then create quantitative assessments of supply chain designs that leverage the specific opportunity space on the African continent. This entails (techno-) economic assessments and environmental lifecycle assessments of selected supply chain designs, and the inclusion of regulatory and policy considerations. Assessments of selected supply chains will include analyses of required supporting infrastructure and other resource needs (e.g., water and electricity) to see how these resources could be supplied. The project will be done in close collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and local partners.
