Title

Transformative learning in education for sustainable development through STEM education. (Research)

Abstract

The importance of a sustainability mindset is widely recognised. Therefore, educational institutions increasingly introduce topics related to sustainability in their curricula as they aim to form critical and engaging students/citizens. Previous literature research has shown that the transformative learning pedagogy might develop the latter. However, as this pedagogy originated in adult education, little is known about its applicability and effects in secondary education. This study will investigate (1) to what extent these transformative learning processes can be shaped via STEM projects in the third grade of secondary school and (2) which learning method (e.g. problem-based learning, design-based learning,...) is most effective to serve this goal.
