Title

Mechanical behaviour of timber frame structures under combined loading (Research)

Abstract

In this project, the mechanical behaviour of lightweight timber frame (LTF) structures under combined loading is investigated. Traditionally, the design of such structures is based on an element-wise verification following design standards such as Eurocode 5 which are based on simplified analytical models. However, these models do not adequately take into account the effect of combined loading conditions and are limited to simple geometries and traditional construction methods and materials. This project therefore aims at the development of refined design rules, in particular for framed walls and floors with a focus on new construction methods and materials. Based on experiments on a connection and structural level, advanced and simplified finite element models are developed and calibrated for the purpose of the parametric analyses of LTF structures, leading to practical design rules.
