Project R-14391

Title

Accelerate and automate the "next generation sequencing" workflow (Research)

Abstract

Healthy, well-functioning ecosystems form the basis for our food supply, water management, diverse and resilient nature, as well as human health and well-being. To better understand the fundamental processes of these ecosystems—soil, water, plants, humans, animals—we utilize DNA-based methods and next-generation sequencing. To conduct these DNA analyses in a qualitative and high-throughput manner, we require an innovative NGSxpress DNA platform. The platform includes an automated liquid-handler robot, an integrated gel electrophoresis, and a long-read sequencer to further develop and expand various new and existing DNA analyses and applications. The platform aims to address existing technical bottlenecks in DNA analyses by increasing efficiency, enabling high-throughput, improving accuracy, implementing quality control, and providing customization. With the purchase and installation of this flexible, innovative, and custom-made NGSxpress platform, VLAIO/EFRO strengthens Flemish DNA expertise with applications in sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, soil biodiversity, and soil remediation. It is a critical success factor in enabling a circular economy, bringing innovation to the Flemish economy, and contributing to the pursuit of a sustainable environment and climate policy.
