Project R-14720

Title

Mesh-bat: NanoMESH-enabled miniature formable BATteries (Research)

Abstract

MESH-BAT targets the development of a high energy density, small area 2.5D Li-based solid-state battery for wearable and implantable devices, combining novel 3D nanomesh current collectors with thin-film cathode coatings, a thin Li-metal anode, and a solid polymer electrolyte. A unique metallic nanomesh is envisioned to act as electronically conducting scaffold, ensuring electrical contact and offering mechanical reinforcement within the cathode. The nanomesh concept enables the use of next generation cathode materials, which are difficult to use in bulk form, but will be applied here as a nanocoating. Increasing the nanomesh thickness improves footprint energy density while maintaining tortuosity and ensuring Li ion transport through the cathode. In addition to developing the required materials and processes and fabricating demonstrator cells, we also target an in depth evaluation and modelling of the electrochemical performance and mechanical durability of electrodes and cells with unconventional shapes/formats (e.g. in- vs. out-of plane curvature).
