Project R-14659

Title

Development of an international learning and research network on exploring the multiple approaches of architectural design for circularity with wood. (Education)

Abstract

In response to the linear and highly polluting practices of the building sector, architecture schools around the world are increasingly devoting space in their curricula and scholarship production to novel ways of designing according to the principles of circularity. The Design for Circularity (DfC) approach strives to transform the industry from an extractive and exploitative model to a regenerative system that positively affects the built environment and the societies around it. In this context, there is an increasing interest in utilizing wood-based construction materials because of their low embodied energy and renewable characteristics. This DIOS Incentive Fund project aims to build a learning and research network on DfC with wood by developing several high-caliber, targeted, international activities along a two-year timespan. The activities in this project will contribute to increasing the knowledge, learning, and research opportunities for staff and students about the challenges and possibilities of DfC with wood. Furthermore, it will promote the ongoing research and teaching activities within the Sustainability research domain from ArcK on a global stage. Finally, the proposed activities will enlarge the local and international network of the research group ArcK and the Sustainability research domain.
