Title
Human-Centred AI for Well-Being in the Manufacturing Industry (Research)
Abstract
Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven digitization is transforming the manufacturing industry, much like
steam power did during the First Industrial Revolution. AI is shifting manufacturing towards more
intelligent, data-driven operations, while also introducing new demands for know-how and
collaborative dynamics between humans and machines. At the same time, the industry is struggling
with significant workforce challenges, such as an ageing workforce, a talent shortage, and the need
to provide sustainable, supportive work environments.
This project aims to address these workforce challenges by leveraging AI-based interventions that
enhance worker well-being. Through interdisciplinary research, we will examine AI's effects across
different levels of an organisation, from the individual workers all the way to the company policies,
to develop AI-driven technologies that foster supportive and adaptable work environments, and
establish a framework for evaluating these innovations. By focusing on human-centred AI, we aim
to ensure that the integration of AI improves employees' well-being, aligning with the vision of
Industry 5.0.
The project's outcomes will contribute to the development of sustainable practices that enhance the
manufacturing sector's resilience and adaptability in a rapidly evolving technological landscape,
ensuring that both industry and workforce thrive together.
