Project R-15014

Title

Construction Campus 2.0 + Application Center Circular Construction (AC³) (Research)

Abstract

Construction Campus 2.0 is the new thematic sub-campus on the university campus in Diepenbeek, which is part of the Masterplan Limburg Diepenbeek Campus (Limburg DC). This campus will be the breeding ground for new innovations in construction, both in terms of digitization and sustainability. The Application Center Circular Construction (AC³) of UHasselt forms the core research infrastructure within Construction Campus 2.0, where circular building materials and systems will be rapidly developed and tested. AC³ comprises several complementary research laboratories equipped with state-of-the-art testing equipment. This includes a laboratory where circular building materials and elements can be produced, a laboratory for various characterization tests of these circular construction solutions, and a climate laboratory with large-scale climate chambers where these building solutions can be subjected to accelerated aging by exposing them to accelerated climatic conditions. This complementary combination of laboratories, along with the adjacent existing Application Center for Concrete and Construction, enables accelerated scaling and thus faster market introduction of circular construction solutions. Additionally, Construction Campus 2.0 provides space to inform and inspire the broader construction sector, to train and further professionalize it. This will be realized in the form of event spaces, demonstration spaces for commercialized applications and results of practice-oriented research, and spaces for companies and knowledge institutions to showcase innovative technologies on the brink of breakthrough. Office space is also provided for supporting advisory organizations. Finally, a public outdoor meeting space is provided between the existing and new Construction Campus, with the possibility to demonstrate construction innovations in the open air.
