Exploring expert behavior of process mining analysts (Research)

Within the field of Process Mining, the discipline known as Process of Process Mining (PPM) emerged. PPM seeks to comprehend the thought processes and behavioral patterns of process mining analysts. Improvements to assist process mining analysts in their daily tasks can be proposed or developed by thoroughly understanding their operations and functions (Sorokina et al., 2023). The behavioral differences between expert and non-expert process mining analysts have not yet been studied within this domain. A better understanding of these differences allows for the design of more effective process mining tools and the construction of more efficient process mining training. Therefore, the aim of my PhD research is to conceptualize behavior in PPM research and to identify expertiserelated behavioral differences among process mining analysts. This main objective is split into four smaller research objectives. The first objective is to create a vocabulary of behavior that process mining analysts exhibit to gain a better understanding of their exact behavior. The second objective is to create a conceptual definition of behavior and an accompanying approach to record such behavior. The goal of the third objective is to collect behavioral data on process mining analysts with varying expertise, which will be analyzed to identify expertise-related differences in process mining analysts' behavior, which is the goal of the fourth research objective.
