Enhancing Ageing Well in the Spirit of Ubuntu: Housing for Older Adults in Cape Town, South Africa. (Research)

Abstract

Ageing well in urban environments poses many challenges, particularly in housing for older adults, spanning socio-economic, cultural, safety, and spatial dimensions. This research delves into housing for older adults in Cape Town, recognising the importance of suitable living conditions and aiming to address the need for comprehensive solutions. The study evaluates available housing options and assesses how well homes meet the needs of ageing individuals. Employing an interdisciplinary approach that merges architecture and social sciences, we gather comprehensive data on the housing needs of older adults. This includes: 1. Uncovering current housing options for older adults in Cape Town, South Africa. This package explores the adequacy, affordability, safety, and accessibility of housing models, with the aim of fostering dignified and supportive living conditions in alignment with the Spirit of Ubuntu. 2. Identifying patterns and disparities in housing among older people in Cape Town, South Africa. 3. Investigating the potential design of responsive and flexible housing options to address the needs and desires of older people in Cape Town. Key themes include demographic diversity in housing arrangements, security, adequacy, and accessibility of existing or alternate housing, as well as barriers to smooth transitioning. The findings contribute to housing optimisation and improving ageing experiences. It addresses ageing challenges, empowers older adults to consider various housing options, and influences architects, designers, and students to create age-friendly and diverse environments. In turn, it enhances the subjective well-being of older adults and enriches community life in the Spirit of Ubuntu.
