Project R-15005

Title

Embracing diversity inclusively. Promoting practices from the programmes Rehabilitation Sciences and Physiotherapy (REKI) and Law (REC). (Education)

Abstract

In our society, half of young people have a migrant background. However, we see that only 1 in 5 of the students entering Flemish universities has a migration background. While the inflow of students with a migration background in the bachelor programme is 28% in the REC programme, we see that it is only 14% in the REKI programme. Moreover, for both programmes, we see a higher likelihood of study dropout and lower study results for these students in their progression. Migration background is thus the most important equity gap, next to prior education. The first objective of this project is to identify potential barriers for the entry and progression of students with a migration background in the REKI and REC programmes, using quantitative and qualitative research. As a second objective, we want to develop and implement a plan of action based on the identified thresholds. For instance, we are thinking of developing a strategy plan for guiding final-year students in their choice of study programme as well as improving the diversity competences of teaching staff through targeted professionalisation sessions, and of students, translating this into an inclusive educational and living environment. In conclusion, this project aims to develop evidence-based tools and best practices to promote inclusion, thus removing barriers for potential students with a migration background and offering them maximum opportunities for development and study success within the REKI and REC programmes. We expect that the educational innovation developed will also be applicable to other target groups and other study programmes.
