Title
Implementation of a sustainability learning path in Engineering Technology, Chemistry,
Physics and Materiomics courses to promote sustainable development goals (SDGs) and
strengthen transversal competences (Research)
Abstract
Sustainable development is currently addressed to a limited extent throughout several
course units of the bachelor and master programmes of Engineering Technology at KU
Leuven/UHasselt and the bachelor Chemistry, bachelor Physics and master Materiomics
of UHasselt. Given that the graduates of these programmes have to tackle a lot of
technological and scientific challenges in the working field, including taking responsibility
for the development of sustainable and innovative materials, technologies and products,
it is crucial for them to have a comprehensive set of sustainability skills. Commissioned
by VLAIO, the current project focuses on the development of a 'Sustainability' learning
path to reinforce and make explicit what is currently already present (sometimes
implicitly) in curricula. This way, this aspect also becomes more visible to students. The
learning path allows for more systematic work on sustainability competences. This
learning path will relate to the transition themes (1) Circular Economy and (2)
Sustainability, and valorising skills will be linked to these. The project is realised in close
cooperation between UHasselt and EnergyVille. The professional field is also closely
involved throughout these activities.
