Title
RE-Use. (Research)
Abstract
'RE-USE' aims to accelerate the re-use of materials in the built environment value chain across the Meuse-Rhine region. The RE-USE consortium, made up of knowledge partners, pilot partners and ecosystem partners, will tackle the four main barriers which hinder the implementation of re-use in the region (data management, legal barriers, economic upscaling, knowledge building and implementation). These barriers are interdependent and will therefore be approached in an integrated manner. All four partner regions of the Meuse-Rhine programme region are actively involved in the project and in all of these subregions, complementary pilot projects will be developed, varying in some way in order to achieve value-adding insights.
The RE-USE project will contribute substantially to the green transition by lowering raw material usage in the built environment whilst allowing for new futureproof business opportunities in Meuse-Rhine. RE-USE is unique as it approaches re-use from the building portfolio point of view and not from a waste stream point of view. Meanwhile, sufficient attention will also be given to SMEs that have to facilitate the reuse of materials. By targeting both large public developers (e.g. social housing, healthcare, municipalities) and SMEs (architects, contractors…), RE-USE will induce systemic changes in the built environment value chain (in demand and offer), thus contributing to the transition of the programme region's economy from a predominantly linear one to a more circular business environment.
