Project R-1445

Title

Methods for estimating the Belgian traffic abroad and foreign traffic in Belgium "MEBETA" (Research)

Abstract

The objective of this project is to develop a methodology that allows to make an estimation of the Belgian traffic abroad and foreign traffic in Belgium. The results should apply to any type of vehicle (cars, trucks, ..). In addition, the developed methodology is also applied to determine the statistics of the last three years (2005,2006 and 2007). The first part of the project will study how other countries address these issues. The study of the methods they use, will also have to apply on the required data. This will make it possible in the next stage, to evaluate whether these methods can be used in Belgium as a function of the available databases. To that end, the second stage of this study will include an inventory of sources of relevant information available in Belgium. During the third part of this project, both inventories resulting from the previous stages will be compared. Depending on the data available in Belgium, the researchers determine which assessment methods can be applied in Belgium. In the last stage the selected methodologies on the Belgian data will be applied and the figures of 2005,2006 and 2007 are being calculated. A comparison with the figures obtained in other countries, will be necessary.
