Project R-3391

Title

Road Safety in Asian and Latin American Countries: principles and approaches (Education)

Abstract

Traffic unsafety is a worldwide problem, that is getting bigger, mainly in low income countries. Since in most low income countries, a proper traffic safety policy has not been a priority up until recently, the existing local knowledge of and experience with traffic safety is rather limited. Thus, initiatives such as short training programmes are necessary in order to change this situation. The specific goals of this short training is twofold. On the one hand, participants need to be aware of the gravity of the traffic safety problem in their country. This problem is frequently underestimated due to the limited registration of the number of accidents and victims. The participants learn to map traffic unsafety and traffic situations in their own country and they learn to interpret the situation correctly. On the other hand, the goal is to give the participants knowledge, insights and skills about traffic safety so they know how to further develop or start new traffic safety projects. The acquired knowledge and skills are attuned to the needs and requirements of Azian and Latin-American countries.
