Title

Multigenerational housing. Phenomenological, comparative and architectural study of a new housing concept for Flanders (Research)

Abstract

This research departs from the current needs for new housing concepts for Flanders and focuses on multigenerational housing. In the rural past of Flanders the multigenerational dwelling was a social evidence, but during the second half of the twentieth century that tradition came to an end. The research question is: what is the phenomenological and architectural essence of the concept of multigenerational housing in the context of the current housing issue in Flanders? Methodologically this research analyses the current housing needs in Flanders, elaborates a critical study of the phenomenology of dwelling, performs a comparative study between international case studies and develops research by design to define the various parameters of the new housing concept in function of architectural realizations.
