UHasselt wants to actively contribute to the transition to a more sustainable society and monitor the results we achieve. A first step was taken with the transversal policy plan ‘Sustainable goals for UHasselt.’ However, it is difficult to translate these ambitions without data into an action plan that sets priorities and responsibilities. This is why UHasselt is working on a carbon footprint and a scientifically based action plan.
What is a carbon footprint?
A carbon footprint maps our organization's environmental impact, with a specific focus on greenhouse gas emissions. Working with an external partner, we analyze direct and indirect emissions from our activities. These insights are essential to get a clear picture of our current impact.
Tackling blind spots thanks to students
In the next phase, we focus on refining our analysis further. In doing so, we want to address blind spots or overly rough estimates. This is where our students play an essential role: under the guidance of lecturers, they will contribute to this process within specific course units.
Towards a science-based action plan
With the carbon footprint results, UHasselt is working on a science-based action plan to reduce its emissions. This plan will be based on clear objectives and frameworks aligned with international scientific standards.
Structural monitoring for lasting progress
Our ambition goes beyond a one-off measurement. UHasselt wants to monitor its carbon footprint structurally. How frequently this happens is based on the initial results and the efforts required. In this way, we ensure that sustainability remains a permanent part of our operations.
Together, we are building a more sustainable university and making a concrete contribution to the fight against climate change.
