Content

As a researcher you are trained to communicate your research results in a scientific way, through specific channels, such as research journals, a PhD thesis, and scientific symposia. However, when you want to attract the interest of for example industrial partners, the scientific way proves to be insufficient.

During this seminar, given by the Tech Transfer Office (Veronique Vermeeren), we will look at the elements of success when approaching people and organizations with information on your research. We will discuss general marketing concepts such as the “Value Proposition”: the benefit of your research. During this workshop we will help you identify your potential clients, the problem you are solving, and what benefits your research can offer. To apply these principles to your own research, we will use a TOP (Technology OPportunity): a 2-pager describing the technology on offer in a structured way.

The seminar will be organised as a presentation with interaction, combined with individual exercises on your own research subject and also in interaction with the other participants.

A hands-on seminar to show the benefit of your research!

Learning outcomes:

After attending this information session, you...

  • understand terms such as “job to be done”, “value proposition”, and “problem-solution” fit.
  • are able to analyse your own research topic and identify possible benefits for others.
  • understand the need to communicate your research and its benefits in a non-academic way to potential partners and clients.
  • know the purpose and the structure of a Technology OPportunity (TOP) and you are able to translate your research into such a format.

Competences

An important part of preparing for any further professional step is becoming (more) aware of the competences you have developed and/or want to develop. In the current workshop, the following competences from the UHasselt competency overview (pdf, 325 KB) are actively dealt with:

  • academic research competences:
    • valorisation

  • intellectual competences:
    • innovativeness
