“Some painters transform the sun into a yellow spot, others transform a yellow spot into the sun.” – Pablo Picasso

Utilizing our talents, competencies, expertise, and passions in our job – and life in general – makes us feel meaningful and boosts our productivity. To express it with the words of Picasso: doing something that we like to do or that we are good at makes us feel the painter that transforms a yellow spot into the sun, instead of the painter that transforms the sun into an ordinary yellow spot.

However, how can you do it? During this session by prof. dr. Lorenz Verelst, you will learn about the concept of job crafting. Job crafting refers to the active changes an individual can make in the job so that it better aligns with one’s talents and motivators. Scientific research has shown that job crafting helps individuals feel more energized at work, perform better, and be more satisfied with their jobs. In the long term, it also helps you to be more successful in your career as it allows you to develop specific career goals.

This workshop is part of the two-day initiative ‘Wellbeing inside-out’. During this wellbeing programme on October 10 & 11 the Doctoral Schools have joined forces with the HR department & team Vitality. 'Wellbeing inside-out' consists of various sessions focusing on mental, physical and social wellbeing, since these 3 are inextricably linked. Immerse yourself in our extensive offer by clicking on the red button at the top of the page.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the workshop, you will have:

  • gathered more insights into your job and yourself.
  • learnt how you can align your job with your core values.

Methods

The session will consist of two parts:

  1. A talk in which participants learn about job crafting
  2. A micro-workshop in which participants will be guided in developing their own job crafting goals. The micro-workshop consists of 3 exercises, which are partly individual and partly collective.

In the second part of the session, participants will develop their own job crafting goals. Participants will be guided by the speaker. Moreover, an online tool that guides participants step-by-step will be used. There will also be a Q&A in which participants can ask any remaining questions.

Competences

An important part of preparing for any further professional step is becoming (more) aware of the competences you have developed and/or want to develop. In the current workshop, the following competences from the UHasselt competency overview are actively dealt with:

Intellectual competences:

  • Personal effectiveness:
    • self-development
    • initiative
    • autonomy
  • Task-orientedness
    • Result-orientedness
