Getting your research to the media

23 October 2024
(7h)
campus Hasselt

Content

Have you ever wanted to extend the reach of your research? In the media, at events, or anywhere else? Then this is the workshop for you. Among other things, we will look at:

  • News: When does research get picked up by the media or a wider audience?
  • Goal and audience: What do I want to achieve and who am I targeting?
  • Media: what channels or events can I target to get my message out? (+ how to get into contact with a journalist)
  • Wow factor: How do I wrap my research into a compelling story?

We'll get to work on your own research and see how you'd like to go public. Then we'll lay out the steps you need to take to increase your chances of success.
In the end, you will have a good understanding of how to talk or write about your research in a clear and engaging way, and have the tools to start your own science communication journey.

Learning outcomes

After attending this training, participants should be able to...

  • uncover the news value of their own research,
  • present their research to the media in a clear and convincing manner.

What others say

This workshop made me reconsider how I have been communicating my project to others so far. In the future I will definitely keep it shorter and more to the point, in order to grab people's interest and not scare them off or bore them with a long-winded story.

I’m very excited to learn more about science communication and apply it to my research!
