Content

Imagine your research on the front page of the newspaper, on the radio or on prime time television. An unrealistic dream? Maybe not. We will jump into the head of a journalist: what kind of news is he or she looking for? We need a ‘wow factor’, but how to find it in our research?

During this workshop Toon Verlinden (The Floor is Yours) will not only focus on the traditional media, but also on specialized channels and social media, so that you can find out which one is more suitable to get your research noticed.

You will learn how to...

  • Find a ‘wow factor’ in your research and create an appealing story.
  • Select the best channel for your purpose.
  • Create your own media channels.
  • Improve your personal branding.
  • How to deal with journalists.

Learning outcomes

After attending this training, participants should be able to...

  • uncover the news value of their own research,
  • present their research to the media in a clear and convincing manner.

Competences

An important part of preparing for any further professional step is becoming (more) aware of the competences you have developed and/or want to develop. In the current workshop, the following competences from the UHasselt competency overview are actively dealt with:

What others say

This workshop made me reconsider how I have been communicating my project to others so far. In the future I will definitely keep it shorter and more to the point, in order to grab people's interest and not scare them off or bore them with a long-winded story.

I’m very excited to learn more about science communication and apply it to my research!
