Content

As a scientist and researcher, it is key to convey complex subject matter to your audience as clearly as possible. The principles of storytelling offer a scientifically supported method to ensure that your message gets across. But a good discourse also requires a well-crafted form. Avoid "death by PowerPoint" by having a well-designed presentation and ditto execution. This workshop, by Aris & Totell en Dr. Martijn Mertens, will provide you with all the ingredients for a successful presentation and a standing ovation.

Learning outcomes

After having attended this workshop, participants will ...

  • master key storytelling principles and practical tools to build their own story,
  • know how to create interaction and keep the attention of their audience,
  • have received hands-on guidelines to translate their story into an attractive visual presentation (poster or PowerPoint),
  • have sharpened their public speaking and presentation skills.

Competences

An important part of preparing for any further professional step is becoming (more) aware of the competences you have developed and/or want to develop. In the current workshop, the following competences from the UHasselt competency overview are actively dealt with:

  • personal effectiveness:
    • Self-confidence
  • interpersonal competences:
    • oral communication
    • presentation skills

What others say

'Oh my God, is this really standard functionality of powerpoint? ... I've lost so much time in the past trying to achieve things like this, for nothing, .... ' were things you could hear several times during the training. This course is really worth your time!

The trainers are experts in the field and adapted their course to the audience instead of giving a more 'general' workshop. I would definitely recommend this to any PhD student.
(participant in 2022)
I recommended this workshop to all of my colleagues because I found it very informative. It helped me see my project from different point of views in order to present my work to different audiences.
