On Tuesday, May 24, 2022, the School of Social Sciences awarded its very first honorary doctorate to Prof. Dr. Stella M. Nkomo during a solemn ceremony in which psychiatrist Dirk De Wachter, philosopher Annemarie Mol, economist Christian Gönroos and the organization TeGek!? were honored.

American professor Stella M. Nkomo (University of Pretoria, South Africa) is a global pioneer and authoritative voice in research on diversity, gender and inequality.
She was one of the first in the field of organizational studies to draw attention to issues such as racial inequality. In it she shows how certain processes and practices within organizations create exclusion and focuses on how inclusion can be promoted.
Stella Nkomo is also founder and president of the Africa Academy of Management (AFAM).
The festivities already started on Monday 23 May in Z33 with a word of welcome by rector Prof. Dr. Bernard Van Heusden and Prof. Dr. Patrizia Zanoni, followed by a lecture by honorary doctor Prof. Dr. Stella M. Nkomo and a panel discussion with Dounia Bourabain (VUB), Sibo Kanobana (UGent) and Koen Van Laer (UHasselt), moderated by Patrizia Zanoni (view the video on the right).
In the afternoon, a visit to the exhibition Charging Myths: On-Trade-Off about lithium in Congo took place in Z33 and we concluded this festive and interesting day with a tour of the campus building "Oude Gevangenis" of Hasselt University.
