Driven by the European Green Deal initiative, citizens, businesses, academics and governments are encouraged to create new innovations that address societal challenges, reduce carbon emissions and generate future employment opportunities. In a rapidly changing world, understanding these transformations has never been more urgent. To safeguard public health and the well-being of our planet, significant changes are crucial. The purpose of the ECoGREEN project* is to support tackling these challenges and paving the way for a more sustainable future by developing and implementing innovate sustainability courses, organising inter-university and co-curricular activities and facilitating collaboration between universities. The Erasmus+ project ECoGREEN is a collaborative initiative between Hasselt University and six Indonesian universities, along with Wageningen University from the Netherlands.
Indonesia is located in a tropical climate area. With its countless biodiversity, Indonesia is one of the lungs of the world whose ecosystems must be preserved.
The balance of ecosystems in Indonesia needs to be maintained together by respecting the environment and natural resources. This requires the role of universities as educational institutions to prioritize the integration of sustainability into their curriculum and educational practices. While many institutions have recognized sustainability as a key concern, taking action and making informed decisions to foster economic, environmental, and social benefits towards a sustainable world, only a few Indonesian universities have translated this into tangible results on their campuses. The main obstacles to achieving campus sustainability in the Indonesian universities lies in the lack of knowledge, experience and resources. Thanks to the ECoGREEN project, various universities have the opportunity to share experiences, inspire and learn from eachother.
