Motion Lab

At the Motion Lab of REVAL Research, we offer a comprehensive range of low to high-tech solutions for human movement analysis. Whether you’re a child, an older adult, a patient, or an elite athlete, our state-of-the-art facility is designed to assess and enhance your functioning and performance.

We specialize in gait and balance assessments, diagnostics, and personalized therapy and training programs. The flagship of this Technology Platform is “MOVElab”: the world’s most advanced biomechanical lab and first of its kind in continental Europe.

Equipment & Expertise:

Our lab is equipped with cutting-edge technology, including:

Ganglabo (1)
  • CAREN High-End (MOVElab): Instrumented dual-belt treadmill, marker-based 3D motion capture using 18 infrared cameras (VICON), interactive virtual reality environment (300 degrees dome), real-time data processing providing immediate feedback, integrated and synchronized muscle activity (EMG).

  • Overground Gait Laboratory: Marker-based motion capture (SIMI 3D), force plates and integrated muscle activity measurements (EMG).

  • Sensor-Based Motion Capture: Inertial Measurement Units (e.g. X-Sense, APDM) for assessments in various settings..
  • Spatiotemporal Parameter Assessment: Tools such as GaitRite and GaitUp for detailed analysis of spatiotemporal parameters.

  • Advanced Motion Capture: Both 3D and 2D markerless motion capture using deep learning algorithms.

  • Upper Limb Motion Analyses: Both sensor-based as well as markerless motion analysis and functional assessments of the upper limb in various patient populations.

  • Motion analysis of Neck and Jaw

Research:

he Motion Lab is mostly related to the following research themes:

The Motion Lab Platform supports a variety of research projects and collaborations, including:

  • MOVElab: this project, funded by EFRO, realizes the installation of MOVElab (CAREN high-end). The project specifically aims to support public-private collaborations by providing unique infrastructure to companies in Flanders and beyond.

Services and collaborations:

The Motion Lab Platform is open to support research collaborations and services, including:

  • Real-Time Evaluations: Biomechanical and indirect calorimetry assessments of human behavior and locomotion in a 300-degree virtual environment.

  • Motion Registration: Full-body movement tracking using both marker-based and markerless technologies, including 3D joint kinematics and muscle activity (EMG).

  • Gait and Balance Analysis: Comprehensive assessments in lab and real-world environments using advanced sensor technologies.

  • Balance Studies: In-depth evaluations to understand balance deficits, fall prediction, and strategies for improvement.

  • Holistic Approach: Integration with other REVAL Technology Platforms enables a comprehensive assessment of human behavior.

We offer several opportunities to collaborate with us:

  • Fee-for-Service: Customized biomechanical movement, gait, and balance evaluations.

  • Facility Access: Use our state-of-the-art equipment with or without technical support.

  • Consultancy Services: Guidance for research projects, including study protocols, ethical approvals, and data analysis.

  • Research Collaborations: Opportunities for projects with or without funding applications, including master’s student assignments.
