Psychophysiology Lab

The REVAL Psychophysiology Lab is dedicated to exploring the intricate relationship between psychological and physiological processes. Our lab focuses on various aspects of symptom perception, interoceptive accuracy, proprioception, and stress reactivity.

Through a range of experimental paradigms, we aim to deepen our understanding of how individuals perceive and respond to bodily sensations and environmental stimuli.

Equipment & Expertise:

Our team investigates subjective and physiological responses to experimentally induced fatigue, dyspnoea, and pain. Our research employs various paradigms, including:

  • Interoceptive Accuracy: Examination of the participants' ability to accurately perceive non-aversive physical sensations or changes. A key paradigm used in our research is the ROD Task, which assesses interoceptive accuracy in response to induced sensations.

  • Proprioception: Our lab investigates how accurately individuals perceive changes in their bodily position through specific accuracy tasks designed to induce such changes.

  • Stress Reactivity: We evaluate how individuals respond to various stressors in a controlled lab environment, measuring the impact of visual, auditory, olfactory, and tactile stimuli in conjunction with interoceptive stimulation.
  • Affective Picture Paradigm (APP)

  • Quantitative Sensory Testing (QST)

  • Rebreathing Test

  • CO2 Inhalation

  • Hyperventilation Provocation Task

  • Cold Pressor Task

The Psychophysiology Lab is equipped with advanced tools for measuring physiological responses, including:

  • Multimodal physiological signal-acquisition, including ECG, skin conductance, sEMG, Heart Rate Variability, respiratory plethysmography
  • Electromyography (EMG)

  • Capnography

  • Force plates

  • Muscle vibration

Services and collaborations:

With the Psychophysiology Lab, REVAL provides a variety of services, including:

  • Muscle shakers: this custom-made device enables the manipulation of the muscles by the application of vibrations. This unique equipment is used in pain research and can be produced on request (use by license).

Researchers, clinicians, and students interested in psychophysiological studies are welcome to collaborate with us. Join us in advancing the field and contributing to our understanding of the complex interplay between mind and body.

  • Fee-for-Service: Assessment of proprioception and stress reactivity, rebreathing test, Hyperventilation Provocation Task and more…

  • Facility Access: Use our state-of-the-art equipment with or without technical support.

  • Consultancy Services: Guidance for research projects, including study protocols, ethical approvals, and data analysis.

  • Research Collaborations: Opportunities for projects with or without funding applications, including master’s student assignments.
