Wrapping up your research project

15 May 2025

campus Diepenbeek

Content

When you are about to wrap up your research project, it is best to carefully consider your future plans with the most valuable output, which is the research data. Most funders and institutions – including Hasselt University – nowadays require that data is archived in a high-quality or FAIR manner, and even made publicly accessible, unless certain legal, contractual, or practical restrictions prevent this ('as open as possible, as closed as necessary').

To enable you to meet these requirements, this workshop will introduce you to the institutional and legal framework concerning data sharing, the numerous existing data archives or 'repositories,' the various possible ways to share your data, and the methods to protect your open data by, for example, applying access control and licenses.

Learning outcomes

After attending this training, participants will ...

  • be aware of the various requirements regarding data archiving and sharing, as stipulated by the major funders and publishers, as well as by our own Hasselt University;
  • be aware of possible legal and contractual restrictions regarding data sharing and publishing;
  • receive a step-by-step practical guide on how to archive and possibly publish their research data in a FAIR way, all while respecting the relevant requirements and/or restrictions;
  • gain hands-on experience with the most important registries of data archives, with a selection of commonly used repositories, and with the Hasselt University Metadata Repository for Research Data.
