An exploration of the inner workings of the narrative imagination and its influence on how we experience and imagine spaces. Starting from the idea that we think in stories, we uncover a few recurring stereotypes and delve into a number of spatial and architectural projects.
This lecture will be preceded by a workshop between 14h30 - 17h30 (only for PhD students). The workshop focuses on literary and narrative techniques that can be used when researching and describing places, objects, events.
Sofie Verraest writes and performs in Dutch, English and West Flemish. She has been awarded writing grants and residencies by Akademie Schloss Solitude, the Elizabeth Kostova Foundation for Creative Writing, Pogon Zagreb and the House of Herman Teirlinck, among others.
Her poetry, fiction and non-fiction can be read in Ninth Letter, Fiction Writers Review, Cordite Poetry Review, Deus ex machina, DW B, and Rekto:verso, among others.
She published 176 poems about getting up and going to sleep on @wakingupgoingtosleep and is currently a columnist at magazine Steiger. She lives in Brussels and teaches literature and architecture at UGent and KASK.
