About the workshops

Content

Are you curious to learn more about Participatory Action Research (PAR) and Community Service Learning (CSL)? Would you like to take up a societal engagement through your current and/or future teaching assignments, fuelled by your research? Are you interested in participating in the co-creation of a knowledge network on the societal role/position of design education institutions?

In this workshop series for junior researchers, we will use the DEAL model (Describe, Examine and Articulate Learning) developed by Ash & Clayton (2009) to engage in an individual and collective critical reflection about the nexus of research – education – societal service.

Throughout the three workshops, you will be invited to (1) develop a (joint or individual) socially engaged design research and education proposal, (2) participate in writing a conference paper for the AMPS 2025 Pedagogy Conference, and (3) engage in the co-development of a project proposal for the Kunstendecreet.

WORKSHOP 1: DESCRIBE - 03.04.2025
Antwerp - 2 to 5 p.m.

In the first workshop, we will work on:

  • describing the CSL initiatives within design education and research (current/best practices)
  • tracing the social questions around which these initiatives work
  • mapping the societal players involved in these initiatives

WORKSHOP 2: EXAMINE - 15.05.2025
Hasselt - 2 to 5 p.m.

In the second workshop, we will work on:

  • reflecting on the role of design within these initiatives
  • documenting the challenges facing the initiators & stakeholders
  • reconstructing the theoretical and operational frameworks being developed around these initiatives
  • reflecting on participatory action research as a method for CSL & a connection between research and CSL education

WORKSHOP 3: ARTICULATE LEARNING
04.09.2025 – Brussels - 2 to 5 p.m.

In the third workshop, we will work on:

  • summarizing lessons learnt
  • developing new CSL initiatives
  • defining future research
