This event has already taken place.
As part of the current edition of PhDrinks on June 29 the doctoral schools of UHasselt are organizing an interactive lecture by Tom Hermans on 'Metaverse applications: blending business and research for new opportunities'.
The metaverse is much more than just another buzzword. The term had already been coined in 1992.
People have been active in virtual worlds for decades, especially in video games. Thanks to modern technologies and the fact that hardware has become cheaper and more accessible to the general public, virtual worlds and XR technologies (virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality) are reshaping our personal and professional lives more and more.
In this session, you will learn more about what the metaverse is, its accompanying technologies, and how it can be useful for your own research by focusing on practical use cases and contemporary scientific research. In this session, both the consumer and industrial metaverse will be discussed so everyone can find value in the metaverse, regardless of their research topic.
Some of the questions we will be answering are: Why do surgeons use VR headsets to teach across the globe? Why are clothing brands active in games such as Roblox or Fortnite? What’s the benefit of creating industrial digital twins?
No prior knowledge is required to attend this session!
The fact that this lecture is part of PhDrinks has two implications:
(1) There will be a reception afterwards!
(2) Attending the lecture cannot be acknowledged in fulfilment of the doctoral school requirements. This is a general agreement between doctoral schools.
