Student Psychologist

Do you want to learn to cope with your feelings differently and deal with the things of value to you?

What does the student psychologist do?

The student psychologist helps you with personal or interpersonal problems.

During an individual consultation, we will look for what you need at this moment and how we can help you. Some students find one session sufficient. Others would like to continue for a longer period of time. We will look at this together with you during the first meeting.

For which themes you can contact us?

  • Depressed mood
  • Domestic issues
  • Fear and anxiety
  • Fear of failure, insecurities, low self-esteem
  • Identity problems
  • Internet or substance-related addictions
  • Procrastination
  • Stress, exhaustion
  • Study-related problems with a psychological component
  • Worrying
  • ...

We help you deal with your feelings and issues of value to you (so your student life and your personal, relational, family and/or health situation can be addressed). You and your needs are key in this process. We can spread this over several sessions, but it is also possible to have a single session with one of the student psychologists.

The duration of a conversation is between 45 and 60 minutes.

Unlike at most other psychologists, there is no waiting list at the student psychologist. In addition, both individual and group sessions are free to all UHasselt students.

I really should have made an appointment much earlier. The psychologist was also so friendly and made me feel very comfortable. They really listen no matter what your problem is. Nothing is too crazy and they really let you be.

Still having doubts?

Here's what your fellow students who have already visited the student psychologist are saying to you:

You should definitely do this! You don't have to feel bad to talk to a psychologist: it can help you with a lot in your life. Especially to make better choices.
Do it! If you are thinking about making an appointment, it means that it is necessary. Then you shouldn't hesitate about it either. It feels good to be able to pour your heart out on a weekly basis and do exercises that can help you.
Definitely do it, you talk to the psychologist for an hour and it can help you tremendously to understand your thoughts/feelings for yourself much better. If you're at all in doubt, it's always a good idea to cut the cord and go, it can only help you.

FAQ

Will my details be kept confidential?

Emails and appointment schedules are kept confidential and only read and responded to by the psychologists. Furthermore, psychologists are bound by professional confidentiality.

How much does a session cost?

Both individual and group sessions are free for all UHasselt students.

Is there a waiting list?

No, we do not have a waiting list. You can immediately book an appointment in the agenda with the psychologist of your choice. This can be done via the appointment link (ATTENTION: Your Google Calendar must be set in the correct time zone ('Brussels').

Help! It is a holiday/lesson-free week and I do feel the need for a consultation.

This is not a problem at all. There is always a psychologist present during the summer vacations and other class-free periods. the only exception to this is the collective closure between Christmas and New Year.

How do I know where my appointment will take place?

If you click on an appointment slot via the appointment link, you will see where the appointment is taking place: in Hasselt, Diepenbeek or online via Google Meet.

What should I enter in "description" when making an appointment?

You can leave the "description" box blank. But, if you wish, you can write something here about why you are making an appointment. Only the student psychologists can read this.

My topic is not described in the themes above, can I still consult you?

If you are in need of a conversation, please contact us. We will then see if and how we can help you further. If necessary we can refer you further.

A psychologist is only for 'serious problems', my problem is not so serious...

You can always come to us. Many students find it difficult to take the first step towards a student psychologist. However, the earlier you seek support, the sooner you can continue on your own.

Will it be long-term therapy?

You are also welcome to come to us for a single consultation. Some students are already helped by this, others need more support. In the first conversation, we will look together at what will help you most.

I am a PhD student. Can I also use your services?

As a doctoral student you can only come to the student psychologists for group sessions. Do you still have questions as a doctoral student?  Have a look at the information page for doctoral students.
