We pave the way for novel designer drugs and screening assays by studying transient protein forms that are invisible to classical structural biology methods.
To do this, we uniquely specialise in analysing so-called fluorescence dynamics, the seemingly random fluorescence intensity fluctuations that occur when molecules (translationally) move, (rotationally) tumble or (structurally) wobble while being imaged.
Practically, we use super-sensitive commercial and home-built fluorescence microscopes, and study the structural and molecular function of proteins in cellular processes and disease. These proteins include cytoskeletal proteins, enzymes, ion channels, membrane receptors and condensating & aggregating proteins.
